How come sperm and eggs used in fertility treatment has to be stored in liquid Nitrogen.?
any other things put in this Nitrogen freezes and is brittle and breaks because its so cold.
liquid nitrogen is used because it's VERY COLD. a cell ( like a sperm or egg) eventually dies. but in the extreme cold ( 77 K on the absolute Kelvin scale) all cell activity that would take a cell through it's complete life cycle efectively stops, suspending the cell at the state it was in at the point at wich it was introduced in the luquid nitrogen. Now this works because these are single cells.
Let's say u have a pet hamster and u love it dearly, so u decide ti shuve him in u'r household liquid nitrogen tank. that wouldnt work .. the hamster will die, because when tissues are involved, water leaves indiviadual cells and formes ice cristals in the space betwen the cells. Ice cristals have jagged microscopical edges that cut trrought the cell walls, thus destroying the tissues.
